چکیده

The minimization problem for Horn formulas is to find a Horn formula equivalent to a given Horn formula, using a minimum number of clauses. A 2 1−ǫ(n)-inapproximability result is proven, which is the first inapproximability result for this problem. We also consider several other versions of Horn minimization. The more general version which allows for the introduction of new variables is known to be too difficult as its equivalence problem is co-NP-complete. Therefore, we propose a variant called Steinerminimization, which allows for the introduction of new variables in a restricted manner. Steiner-minimization of Horn formulas is shown to be MAX-SNP-hard. In the positive direction, a o(n), namely, O(n log log n/(log n))-approximation algorithm is given for the Steiner-minimization of definite Horn formulas. The algorithm is based on a new result in algorithmic extremal graph theory, on partitioning bipartite graphs into complete bipartite graphs, which may be of independent interest. Inapproximability results and approximation algorithms are also given for restricted versions of Horn minimization, where only clauses present in the original formula may be used.

Incremental Recompilation of Knowledge

Approximating a general formula from above and below by Horn formulas (its Horn envelope and Horn core, respectively) was proposed by Selman and Kautz (1991, 1996) as a form of \knowledge compilation," supporting rapid approximate reasoning; on the negative side, this scheme is static in that it supports no updates, and has certain complexity drawbacks pointed out by Kavvadias, Papadimitriou an...

Horn Minimization by Iterative Decomposition 1

The problem of Horn minimization can be stated as follows: given a Horn CNF representing a Boolean function f , nd a CNF representation of f which consists of a minimum possible number of clauses. This problem is the formalization of the problem of knowledge compression for speeding up queries to propositional Horn expert systems, and it is known to be NP-hard. In this paper we present a linear...

On the Approximability of Splitting-SAT in 2-CNF Horn Formulas

Splitting a variable in a Boolean formula means to replace an arbitrary set of its occurrences by a new variable. In the minimum splitting SAT problem, we ask for a minimum-size set of variables to be split in order to make the formula satisfiable. This problem is known to be APX-hard, even for 2-CNF formulas. We consider the case of 2CNF Horn formulas, i. e., 2-CNF formulas without positive 2-...

A rational cubic trigonometric approximation scheme of the generalized Cornu spirals

The [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]-approximation schemes are introduced to approximate the popular generalized Cornu spirals with the help of the parametric rational cubic trigonometric Bézier curves. The [Formula: see text]-approximation scheme has two free parameters whereas [Formula: see text]-approximation scheme has four free parameters. To approximate the generalized Cornu sp...
